Undergraduate Research (UTEAM-MARC) 2-Year Fellowship in Comparative Biomedical Research

NIH-Funded 1T34GM158520

The NIH-funded Maximizing Access to Research Careers (MARC) Undergraduate Research Fellowship provides interdisciplinary research training to research focused students from a breadth of backgrounds who have a strong interest in pursuing a Ph.D. in the Biomedical field. The CMI-MARC program, funded by a National Institutes of Health (NIH) grant, is designed to enhance research opportunities and academic support while addressing the critical shortage and broadening the representation of individuals entering the biomedical workforce. The program aims to contribute by expanding opportunities for students pursuing entry into Ph.D. programs in the biomedical field. Successful candidates will be drawn from academically motivated and disadvantaged students in the Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Biomedical Engineering, and other Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) disciplines.

The program provides extensive hands-on experience in challenging research projects, along with professional development designed to prepare students to enter into Ph.D. Biomedical Sciences programs. The goal of the CMI-MARCU undergraduate Research Fellowship is to develop a broad range of scholars who complete their baccalaureate degree, and transition into and complete biomedical, research-focused Ph.D.

Successful candidates should have a > 3.0 grade point average, a strong showing in the completion of STEM-related coursework, students who display a well-defended desire to pursue interdisciplinary team-oriented undergraduate research, a well-defended desire to pursue a Ph.D. in the biomedical in the biomedical field, and demonstrate a willingness to engage in research professional development practices. Eligible students must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents.

Students selected for this program are enrolled in the TEAM minor and along with their academic course load are required to engage in 10-12 hours of weekly research (1 hour per week is designated for students to engage in the Advance Together curriculum which supplements their research experience). Students’ research engagement should lead to students demonstrating a strong science self-efficacy, at least one scientific publication, and entry into a Ph.D. program in the Biomedical field.
